Sports events boost holiday spending in Beijing

Beijing hosted two major sports events - the WTT China Smash and the 2024 China Open - during the National Day holiday from Oct. 1 to 7. The two top-tier tournaments not only fueled consumer spending in the sports sector but also revitalized commercial hubs surrounding the venues.

At Shougang Park, the WTT China Smash attracted a large number of spectators and selling out the venues for several days. The total ticket sales reached 60 million yuan (US$8.49 million). Visitors enjoyed not only the competition but also the park's industrial charm and various activities, such as casual table tennis matches and outdoor leisure activities.

Similarly, the China Open drew tennis fans from all over the country. According to the organizers, this year's China Open achieved record-breaking ticket sales and attendance. Total ticket revenue exceeded 80 million yuan, marking a 60% increase compared to last year. Throughout the entire event, an estimated 300,000 people attended, a 50% growth from the previous year.

The success of these events spurred significant growth in surrounding commercial areas. For instance, Shougang's Liugonghui shopping plaza saw high foot traffic, and local hotels were fully booked during the holiday. The events helped to bring over 29 million yuan to Shougang Park in sales revenue over the holiday period.

Additionally, the events enhanced the city's nighttime economy. The Olympic Park area, which include the venue of the China Open, saw an uptick in evening activities with live performances and food markets.

During this year's China Open, total consumer spending generated through the event exceeded 25 million yuan, an increase of nearly 40% compared to last year.
