Nicolas Caro scored a second-half equalizer as Deportivo Riestra held top side Velez Sarsfield to a 1-1 home draw in Argentina's Primera Division on Monday.

The visitor took the lead just before halftime when Braian Romero converted from the penalty spot after a Brian Sanchez handball.

Caro put his side on level terms just after the hour by sweeping home a first-time effort from the edge of the six-yard box after Alan Barrionuevo's cross from the left side of the penalty area.

Velez, who has just one victory from its past five league outings, remains a point clear of second-placed Huracan in the 28-team standings with five match days remaining. Deportivo Riestra is ninth, 12 points off the pace.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Monday, Argentinos Juniors won 1-0 at home to Banfield, Defensa y Justicia romped to a 4-0 win at Tigre, Lanus was held to a goalless home draw by Platense, and Belgrano secured a 3-1 home victory over Instituto Cordoba.
