Genoa has struggled since the start of this season, only amassing 10 points after 12 rounds under former coach Alberto Gilardino, one point above the relegation zone, prompting the Grifone to show the exit door to the 2006 World Cup winner.

Starting his professional career in Cannes, Vieira had a short stint at AC Milan before moving to Arsenal where he shot to fame in a nine-year spell. The midfielder also played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City, before hanging up his boots in 2011.

After his retirement, the Frenchman took on a role as a youth coach at Manchester City. The 48-year-old also had spells with New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.

According to Italian outlets, Vieira has penned a deal which runs until 2026.

Vieira's first match in charge of Genoa will be Saturday's home tie against Cagliari.
