Claudio Aquino and Damian Fernandez scored first-half goals as Velez Sarsfield secured the Argentine Primera Division title on Sunday with a 2-0 home victory over Huracan on the last day of the season.

Aquino put the host ahead on the half-hour with a first-time effort from the edge of the six-yard box after his initial attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

Fernandez doubled the advantage when he capitalized on another rebound after Galindez parried away Valentin Gomez's attempt from 12 yards.

Huracan failed to have a single shot on target as Velez clinched their 14th win of the campaign to finish three points clear of second-placed Talleres Cordoba and five points ahead of both Racing and Huracan.

"Today was a spectacular match from the whole team," Velez manager Gustavo Quinteros said. "Our plan was carried out to perfection. The players deserve this. They had a great season, and it is only fair that we are the champions."

It was Velez's 11th Argentine top-flight title and their first since the 2012-13 season.

Before Sunday, the Buenos Aires outfit had endured a frustrating 2024, finishing runner-up in both the League Cup and the Copa Argentina.

"It is a just reward for us for all of the effort we put in throughout the season," Aquino said. "Today, we showed our best football, and justice was done."

In other fixtures on Sunday, Defensa y Justicia was held to a goalless home draw by Union Santa Fe, Platense won 1-0 at home to Gimnasia, and Newell's prevailed 3-1 at Talleres Cordoba
