Carlos Alcaraz won the 52nd edition of the ABN Amro Open tennis tournament in Rotterdam on Sunday, beating Australia's Alex de Minaur 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the final.
With his victory, the top-seeded Spaniard, ranked third in the ATP World Ranking, won the first indoor title of his career. He is also the first Spanish winner in Rotterdam, with Rafael Nadal (2009) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2004) each reaching the final once.
In the first set, it was even until 4-4, but then Alcaraz broke his opponent and won the first set. In the second set, the Spaniard was unable to overcome a 3-0 deficit, but Alcaraz came back and broke De Minaur in the third set for a 4-2 lead, and saw out the set thereafter.
It was Alcaraz's first appearance at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam. In the semifinals, he had defeated Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in three exciting sets, while De Minaur had little trouble with Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci.
"This week has been a really good week all together," Alcaraz addressed the crowd afterwards.
"Coming here not feeling 100 percent well with the cold, but after every day I was feeling better and better. Rotterdam has been a really special week for me. It was the first time that I was playing here and you made it like I've been playing this tournament for a long time."
