Local favorite Mariano Navone progressed to the Argentina Open quarterfinals on Thursday with a shock 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory over Danish second seed Holger Rune.

Navone, who is currently ranked No. 46 in the world, won 76 percent of points on his first serve to prevail in an hour and 42 minutes on the outdoor clay of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.

In the next round he will face Brazil's Joao Fonseca, who progressed by overcoming Federico Coria of Argentina earlier in the day.

"I was a little nervous in the second set but I calmed down and settled the match," Navone said.

"My next match will be against Fonseca, who I beat last year at the Rio Open, where I was under a lot of pressure. It's going to be a difficult match for both of us," the 23-year-old from Buenos Aires added.

Meanwhile, former world No. 8 Diego Schwartzman bowed out of professional tennis with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Spain's Pedro Martinez.

The 32-year-old Argentine had already announced that this would be his last tournament as a professional player and admitted he had surprised himself by beating seventh-seed Nicolas Jarry in the first round.

"It was a great journey," Schwartzman said. "I had incredible people by my side along the way and I'm very grateful for their support. Thanks to everyone. I'll remember this and I hope to continue supporting Argentine tennis from the other side."
