The Shanghai Sharks announced Thursday that Lu Wei has been promoted from interim to full-time head coach of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) outfit.
Across a 15-year professional career, Lu played for multiple CBA teams, including Jilin, Shanghai and Qingdao, before retiring in August 2020 following a final stint with the Nanjing Monkey Kings.
Lu was appointed assistant coach of the Shanghai Sharks in June 2023, before taking over as interim head coach last November.
His tenure has been marked by historic achievements as the Sharks shone at the inaugural CBA Club Cup, winning all four group games and securing the title with consecutive knockout-round victories. Additionally, the team posted a 19-3 record in the CBA regular season's second stage, riding on a 16-game winning streak - the second-longest in franchise history.
