The handover to the new IOC president will take place on the same day, which is also recognized as Olympic Day. The new president will be elected on March 20, 2025, in Costa Navarino, Greece.
Bach tendered his resignation this week to the IOC EB, following his announcement at the IOC Session in Paris during the 2024 Olympic Games that he would not seek an extension of his presidency, despite requests from IOC members for him to do so.
A gold medalist in foil fencing at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Bach was elected as the ninth president of the IOC on September 10, 2013, and was re-elected for a second four-year term on March 10, 2021.
