Neymar was recalled to Brazil's national squad on Thursday for World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina after a 17-month absence.

The 33-year-old has not represented his country since suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in Montevideo in October 2023.

"We know that he is still in a recovery process, but we also understand that his quality could help us to overcome any situation that may arise during a match," Brazil manager Dorival Junior told a news conference.

"We were naturally waiting for the first opportunity to have him available. He is a player that everyone knows and understands very well. May he be very happy with his return and may we also provide him with the security he needs to be at his best."

Brazil will meet Colombia in Brasilia on March 20 and Argentina in Buenos Aires five days later.

The five-time world champions are currently fifth in the 10-team South American group with 18 points from 12 qualifiers, seven points behind leaders Argentina.

Neymar has shown glimpses of his best form since rejoining boyhood club Santos from Al-Hilal in January. In seven matches, the forward has scored three goals - including a stunning direct strike from a corner - and provided three assists for the Brazilian club.

Despite his enthusiasm at Neymar's availability, Dorival urged fans and the media to avoid placing excessive pressure on the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star.

"Let's not create too high expectations," the 62-year-old said. "The idea is to have balance and consistency in these two matches, which will be very difficult."
