Chinese women's doubles pair Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan reached the last 16 at Indian Wells with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory over compatriots Wu Fang-Hsien and Jiang Xinyu on Saturday.

Despite hitting seven double faults, Xu and Yang won 76% of their first-serve points and converted three of seven break points to prevail in an hour and 31 minutes.

Wu of Chinese Taipei and Jiang of China looked solid on their first serve and showed good chemistry at the net, but struggled to match their opponents' consistency from the baseline.

Xu and Yang will meet Sofia Kenin of the United States and Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals.

The eighth-seeded duo progressed by overcoming Alexandra Panova and Ena Shibahara on Friday.

Earlier, Zhang Shuai of China and Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei reached the women's doubles round of 16 at Indian Wells on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Japanese pair Eri Hozumi and Shuko Aoyama.

The fifth-seeded pairing of Zhang and Hsieh won 76% of points on their first serve and 52% on their second to take the match in one hour and 19 minutes.

Aoyama and Hozumi won just 48% of points on their serve and 37% when returning.

Zhang and Hsieh will meet American duo Makenna Jones and McCartney Kessler on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals.
