The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the event program and athlete quotas for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28), and 22 more medal events compared to Paris 2024 were included in the Games, the IOC announced on Wednesday.

A total of 351 medal events are in the LA28 program and the athlete quota is 10,500, with an extra 698 quota places allocated for five sports -- baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash -- proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee.

The IOC also announced all team sports will have at least the same number of women's teams as men's teams, which is the first time in the Olympic history.

Gender equality was a key consideration when deciding on the athlete quota and the number of events, the IOC said. In the initial sports program, the number of female athletes is 5,333 and the number of male athletes 5,167.

LA28 also expands mixed events in archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), golf, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint and table tennis.

In swimming, the 50m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke events all will have both men and women competitions.

In rowing, women's solo (CW1x), men's solo (CM1x) and mixed double sculls (CX2x) will make their debut in coastal beach sprint.

In basketball 3x3, the participating teams are expanded from eight to 12 teams per gender at LA28.

In sport climbing, boulder and lead events will now be contested as separate medal events, creating new stages for athletes to shine.

The IOC also indicated that 24 out of 31 Olympic International Federations had put forward a request for a change in their event program from Paris 2024. In total, 46 new events were requested (16 male/17 female/13 mixed), six of which were to potentially replace existing events, making a net total of 40 more events requested. In total, 772 additional quota places were requested for the initial sport and event program of 10,500 athletes (339 male/433 female).

The IOC approved the inclusion of boxing at LA28 in March 2025, which making the sports program to 31 sports.
