Murakami achieved recognition in China with the publication of Norwegian Wood, a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality.Haruki Murakami is one of the most popular writers in Japan and worldwide. He has won the Franz Kafka Prize and Jerusalem Prize. The Guardian once described him as "among the world's greatest living novelists". He wrote his first book Hear the Wind Sing when he was 29. It was adapted into a feature film, which was released in 1981.
His other best sellers include Hear the Wind Sing, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.
Murakami is a fan of American writer Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald.
Murakami made 12.5 million yuan (1.87 million US dollars) in royalties in the Chinese mainland over the past ten years through 2010.
