   The Art of Victory

 Author: Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov

Published: 1806

Notable quote: "When the enemy is driven back, we have failed, and when he is cut off, encircled and dispersed, we have succeeded."

The Art of Victory was written by Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov (1729-1800), an outstanding Russian general and military strategist. The author, one of the few great generals who had never lost a battle, highlighted the fundamental significance of systematic training to victory, as well as his training principles and programs in the book. Suvorov condensed his military arts into three phrases: Apprehension, Quickness and Attack at once with cold steel. The ultimate goal was to foster disciplined and firmly-confident troops that had the ability to move fast, assess situations accurately, attack decisively with firepower and bayonet and pursue the enemy relentlessly. The classic manual reflected the advanced military theories and practices of Russia in the 18th century and had huge influences on the military thinking of Europe and the Soviet Union. In 1918, the Handbook of the Red Army Soldiers approved by Lenin incorporated the major principles of the Art of Victory.
