 Hammer Price: US$36.27 million

"La lecture", a 65.5cm x 51cm small painting completed in 1932 by the established Spanish artist and cubism co-founder Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), hammered for US$36.27 million at Sotheby's in London on Feb. 8, 2011. The oil on panel depicts Picasso's young mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter who was taking a nap with a book on her lap. Picasso, the annual list's most frequent winner, only came in 7th this year. He also slipped from the bellwether position to No. 4 on the global artist rankings by auction revenue in 2011.
