Guus Hiddink's nearly 30-year-long managerial career has seen many highs, despite the fact that he didn't show any particular flair for coaching when playing on the field himself. He made his fame as a brilliant coach when he helped PSV Eindhoven to their 1988 win of the European trinity (Eredivisie, Dutch Cup and European Cup). After leading South Korea to a fourth place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, making it the first and only Asian team ever to reach the semi-final stage, prestigious clubs went after him.. He also helped Australia to their best ever finish during the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and guided Russia to the semi-finals of the 2008 UEFA Euro.
After being dismissed by Turkey in 2011 for failing to help the Turkish national team qualify for the UEFA Euro 2012, Hiddink signed an 18-month deal with Russian Anzhi Makhachkala in February 2012. The deal earns him an annual income of €7.5 million, a figure envied by many other managers. It has been said that Makhachkala once turned down an offer estimated at £15 million per year from China's Guangzhou Evergrande, which would have made him the most expensive football manager in the world.
