The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was established in Beijing by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1958 with the aim of cultivating the country's most promising scientific and technological talent. It was moved to Hefei City, Anhui Province in early 1970s. Since 1978, the USTC has initiated a series of proactive and innovative measures to meet the needs of China's economy. In 1978, the USTC set up the first graduate school in China. Its "Special Class for Gifted Youth," a five-year research-intensive program for talented youth, has helped foster hundreds of successful scientists, researchers and technology entrepreneurs. In the 1980s, the USTC was the most prestigious destination for science and technology scholars in China. As a national key university, it focuses on scientific and technological research, while at the same time, embraces humanities and management.
