Peking University was founded as the Imperial University of Peking in 1898 to replace the Imperial College (Guozijian). As early as 1920, the university had already proven itself to be the nation's center of progressive thought. Later, it distinguished itself as the birthplace of China's New Culture and May Fourth Movements, was the originator of Marxist, democratic and scientific thought in China as well as one of the CPC's strongholds. It has nurtured and guided a great number of famed Chinese thinkers, including Mao Zedong, author Lu Xun and CPC co-founder Li Dazhao.
