After graduating from Tsinghua University in 1990, Jennifer Li continued her studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., Canada and obtained her MBA degree there in 1994. From 1994 to 2001, Li held several financial posts with General Motors in Canada, the United States and Singapore. In 2004, she was appointed chief financial officer of General Motors China.

From 2005 to February 2008, Li served as controller of General Motors Acceptance Corporation's North American Operations. In March 2008, she moved to Baidu and served as chief financial officer of the company. Since May 2010, Li has been serving as the independent director of Philip Morris International, Inc, making her the first Chinese woman ever to hold this position. In April of this year, Li was included in Fortune's "Asia's 25 hottest people in business" rankings.
