Located in central Madrid, the Museo del Prado is the best national art museum Spain has to offer. Established in 1819, it boasts one of the world's finest collections of European art dating from the 12th century to the early 19th century, including 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings. It houses the well-known "Las Meninas" by Velázquez. A large amount of precious collections make it one of the most popular museums in the world. In 2012, the Museo received 2.8 million visitors.
