Mount Mihara, an active volcano on the Japanese isle of Izu Oshima, has been a popular venue for suicides since the 1920s. The most famous suicide incident was Kiyoko Matsumoto, a young student who threw herself into the volcanic crater of Mount Mihara in 1933 because she was shamed for falling in love with another girl. In order to prevent suicides, Izu Oshima's management department has strengthened their administration and has made purchasing a one-way ticket to the island a criminal offense.
