Editor's Note: On the world's leading movie review website Rotten Tomatoes, there are a few films that are approved by the most, if not by all of the critics who reviewed them. The Tomatometer rating, which the website claims as "the most trusted measurement of quality entertainment," is a major reference used both by the worldwide audience and the film industry. The rating shows the percentage of positive professional reviews for films and TV shows and is used by millions every day to guide their entertainment viewing decisions. Every movie on the Rotten Tomatoes guide is Certified Fresh, meaning a minimum number of approved critics – 40 for limited releases, 80 for wide releases – watched it, reviewed it, and voted it up to at least 75% on the Tomatometer, according to a recent editorial on the website.
In 2019, the following top 10 feature movies from around the world (listed below) that were screened either in 2018 or during this year, earned the highest scores so far in the Rotten Tomatoes annual picks. This includes a Chinese film "Ash Is Purest White" by well-known art-house Chinese director Jia Zhangke, and an American film "The Farewell" focusing on culture clash in a Chinese-American family.
10. "Rojo"
Tomatometer: 98%
"Rojo" is an Argentinian thriller directed by Benjamin Naishtat. Set in the mid-1970's, it tells a story about a successful lawyer who takes a path of no return involving death, secrets and silences, after a stranger shows up at his community to insult him and later wreak a terrible vengeance on his family. The Critics Consensus: "A pitch-black thriller with uncommon wit and sophistication, 'Rojo' tells a story as rich and evocative as the deepest shade of its title color."
