Built in 1488 during the Ming Dynasty, A-Ma Temple (or Mazu Temple) is one of the oldest Chinese worship sites in Macao commemorating Mazu, the "Goddess of the Sea." The deity has been widely worshipped by merchants and fishermen in southeast China. Grand ceremonies are held here every year on March 23 (under the Lunar calendar), Mazu's birthday.
