2. The WIPO Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances took effect.
On April 28, 2020, the WIPO Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances went into effect. The treaty was adopted in Beijing on June 26, 2012. It is the first international intellectual property treaty that has been adopted in China and named after a Chinese city since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The treaty aims to fully protect the moral and economic rights enjoyed by performers via their performances. Its adoption and enforcement have comprehensively improved the protection of performers' rights by the international community, and will effectively promote the development of the audiovisual performance industry.
At the 61st series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO held in Geneva, Switzerland from Sept. 21 to 25 last year, Yan Xiaohong, chairman of the Copyright Society of China, was elected as the first assembly chair of WIPO Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances. This is the first time that a Chinese representative has held the position of chair of the WIPO copyright treaty assembly.
