Gong first came into international prominence by starring several films directed by renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou, including "Red Sorghum", "Ju Dou", "Raise the Red Lantern" and "The Story of Qiu Ju". Her English-language movies included "Memoirs of a Geisha", "Miami Vice", "Hannibal Rising" and "Shanghai". Her excellent performance in "Memoirs of a Geisha", where she played the beautiful but vindictive Hatsumomo, received critical acclaim.
Gong was awarded twice the Golden Rooster Awards and the Hundred Flowers Awards, as well as the Volpi Cup from the Venice International Film Festival (1992), the New York Film Critics Circle Award (1993), the Berlinale Camera (1993) and the Cannes Festival Trophy (2005). She was invited to be the president of the international jury for the 50th Berlin International Film Festival in 2000, the 59th International Venice Film Festival in 2002 and the 16th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2003.
