Zhang Ziyi, a starlet originally fostered by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, is now one of the most internationally renowned Chinese actresses. She came into the limelight in 1998 when she played a pure and lovely girl in Zhang Yimou's romantically-themed film "The Road Home".

Zhang then gained international fame in 2000 through the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", which won her a number of prestigious awards, including Chicago Film Critics Association Awards and Toronto Film Critics Association Awards. Her role in the international bestseller "Memoirs of a Geisha" (2005) made her even more famous in the West and earned her a 2006 Golden Globe Award nomination, a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination and a BAFTA nomination.

Zhang has been nominated for numerous awards throughout her career, including three BAFTA Award nominations and one Golden Globe Award nomination. She has been listed for four times as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine and featured for three times on the cover of Time magazine.
