Cheung is the five-time Best Actress award winner at the Hong Kong Film Awards and four-time Best Actress winner at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, setting a record that no other Chinese actress has surpassed. She also received the Best Actress Award for her 1992 film "Centre Stage" at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival.
Even more remarkably, she is the first Asian actress to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival, garnering the Best Actress Award for her outstanding performance in the film "Clean" directed by French director Olivier Assayas in 2004. The New York Times rated her as one of the 22 greatest performers of 2006 for her portrayal of the role Emily in the film.
Cheung has shifted her focus to philanthropy and music in recent years. In 2010, she was appointed as a UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) ambassador in China.
