Leung, who was formerly a Hong Kong TVB starlet, came international fame and won a large fan base worldwide in the 1990s for his extraordinary portrayals of various characters in a wide range of films directed by high-profile directors John Woo, Wong Kai-wai and Hou Hsiao Hsien. He has won five Best Actor statues at the Hong Kong Film Awards and three Best Actor statues at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards, the greatest number for any Chinese actor.
Leung won the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award in 2000 for his performance in Wong Kar-wai's "In the Mood for Love" as a betrayed newspaper editor who falls into a complex romance with his neighbor. More recently, his role in "Lust, Caution" (2007) as Mr. Yee earned him the Best Actor tile at both the Asian Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards.
