A new high-speed rail service in southwest China linking Sichuan's capital Chengdu and the Chongqing Municipality has officially been opened to traffic.

The 308-kilometer-long Chengdu-Chongqing Highspeed Railway, with a designed speed of 300 to 350 kilometers per hour, will reduce the travel time between the two cities to around 1.5 hours with 11 stops.

Zhang Zhengyuan from the Chengdu Railway Bureau said passenger transport volumes increased significantly.

"As far as passenger transport volumes are concerned, the trains on the line will carry 32 thousand passengers every day, about 10 thousand more compared to the past."

The high-speed line uses CRH380 trains, the fastest and most-advanced type in China.

The railway line's construction was started in March 2010, and the line started trial runs at the end of November.
