Children experience fetching water from the Red Well at Hongjing scenic spot in Ruijin, east China's Jiangxi Province, July 11, 2016. Ruijin, which is known as the cradle of the People's Republic of China and the starting point of the Long March of the Red Army, once served as the capital of the China Soviet Republic and the Red Army headquarters. In November 1931, China Soviet Republic was established by the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Mao Zedong was elected the president of the republic. It was the first time that CPC got the chance to govern a region after its foundation in 1921. The China Soviet Republic reached a peak of more than 50,000 square kilometers and a population of more than three million. Under the encirclement campaigns of Kuomintang, CPC abandoned Ruijin in 1934 and started the Long March, a great military maneuver carried out by the Red Army from 1934 to 1935 to combat the Kuomintang regime.
