Horses at Shandan Horse Ranch in Zhangye city, Northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug 21, 2016. The ranch on the Damaying pasturelands in the Qilian Mountains covers 219,690 hectares. The history of the ranch can be traced back to 121 BC when famed Chinese general Huo Qubing established it to breed horses for the army of China. Well-known for the Shandan horse hybrid, the ranch continued to be the center for breeding military and royal horses through several dynasties. As demand for horses declined in the army, it was transferred to the China Animal Husbandry Group in 2001. It is now the largest ranch in the world. (Photo: China News Service/Yang Yanmin)
