The Tashilhunpo monastery is the traditional seat of successive Panchen Lamas, the second highest ranking Lama in the Gelupa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located next to Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet. Founded in 1447, it has established a high prestige among pilgrims. Many monks also yearn for this sacred place, for the unique way of learning sutras. Located on a hill, the name of the monastery, Tashilhunpo, means "heap of glory". [China.org.cn]
