The First Jiuzhai Cup International Photography Contest, designed to boost conservation and research of giant panda, was launched in Chengdu on May 6.

The China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda will launch a large-scale campaign to promote panda culture in cooperation with local governments and publicity departments of areas where giant pandas live.

The photography was the first of the activities to be held under the campaign.

The grand prize, which goes to one entry, will be 50,000 yuan in cash. Gold-, silver- and bronze-prize winners, two, six, and ten respectively, will receive 10,000, 5,000 and 2,000 yuan in cash. An honorable mention, to 80 entries, will be worth 500 yuan. A nomination by the organizing committee will be worth 500 yuan.

Registration and entry submission lasts from May 6 through November 6. The contest is open to international participation.

Subjects of entries should be giant panda sanctuaries, bases and parks in and outside China. The entries will be exhibited on the official websites of China Conservation and Protection Center for Giant Panda and Jiuzhaigou County and designate news websites.

The contest is a specific action of the center to develop giant panda culture, popularize giant panda science and promote giant panda culture, said Zhang Zhizhong, an official of the research center.

Luo Zhibo, an official of Jiuzhaigou County, said, both the giant panda and Jiuzhaigou are calling cards of China. The combination of the two in overseas marketing will benefit both of them.

Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve and Jiuzhaigou Wujiao Provincial Nature Reserve for Giant Panda are both habits for the rare animal. Luo said Jiuzhaigou, already a world-famous sight-seeing destination, will strive to become a world-famous holiday resort.
