Smartphone application paves way for star wannabes

Dahye is the main vocalist of a Korean girl group called Bob Girls. They made their debut in June with their first single No Way.

Life changed for the 22-year-old when she uploaded a video of her singing at home using a smartphone app.

"Walking into a management agency can feel very nerve-racking, but with this app you can still seek for a meeting with them just by uploading your song" Dahye said.

Dahye, who wanted to become a singer since she was thirteen, says, she tried all kinds of different audition methods, but it was the smartphone app Audition that helped her to get noticed by management companies.

Jocoos, a local start-up, launched the Audition app in early 2013. During peak months, up to 3,500 users upload their videos, hoping to become the next K-pop idol.

The company, with just 11 employees, invites the cream of the crop to its own audition program offline.

A handful of last season's contenders are in the exciting process of signing contracts with some of South Korea's leading entertainment management agencies.

"We provide a service that connects supply with demand," Co-Founder & CEO of Jocoos Choi Changhoon said. "Those who want to open auditions and those who want to apply can both do so easily."

More than 40 percent of the traffic comes from overseas, and half of that is from Southeast Asia.

Most of their users are in high-school or university. So their next audition season is slated for January, when schools break for the winter in South Korea.
