The largest annual book fair in the US has opened in New York City. The Book Expo attracts hundreds of foreign publishers every year. This year, China is in the spotlight.

A crowded opening ceremony and a warm reception. Publishers, all gathered on day one of the annual BookExpo America to welcome their guest of honor -- China.

Even the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Cui Tiankai, was there for celebrations.

"You never open a book, without learning something," Cui said.

The Chinese are the largest international delegation to ever attend the annual book fair and they're showcasing everything from children's books, to educational, cultural and even political publications.

"Karl Marx for Young Readers was written by one of the most well known Marx scholars, Han Yuhai, who is a professor at Peking University, the top University in China. After this book was published in China, it was very well received and we talked with a U.S. publisher called Benchmark Education who is happy to publish the English version of the book in the U.S.," said Zengyi, foreign rights director of China Children's Press & Publication Group.

Over 500 publishing professionals from across China are here in New York. All of them hoping to catch the eye of an American publisher and establish a U.S. presence.

"America is the engine of the world's economy and it's good in the cultural development. If the Chinese culture wants to face the world, it first has to come to America," said Wu Xiaoping, president of Phoenix Publishing & Media.

According to the 2014 Global Ranking of the Publishing Industry report, China ranks second in the world and accounts for 12% of the global book publishing industry.

As the industry grows, it's not just the Chinese that want exposure in the U.S., American writers and publishers also want to establish a presence in the China.

"There are a lot of channels available for American publishers to publish books in China. We welcome all of the global publishers to come to China since we have one of the largest and oldest publishing histories in the world. So we welcome all foreign publishers," said Li Yan, vice president of China Publishing Group Corporation.

Publishers and authors hope BookExpo America will serve as a platform for the two countries to work closer together and help audiences better understand the diverse and varying cultures.
