Real Madrid's Higuain sounds title battle cry
April-21-2010

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain on Tuesday repeated his conviction that his side can overtake BBVA Primera Liga leaders FC Barcelona to win the title.

Real Madrid currently has 83 points in the league table, one point behind Barcelona with five games left in the season.

While Barcelona entertains bottom of the table Xerez next weekend, Real Madrid travels to Zaragoza, a side battling to avoid relegation to the second division.

"The match in Zaragoza will be very difficult because they are fighting to avoid relegation, while w want to win the title," he said.

Higuain also speculated on the prospect of his team winning its remaining matches, which would give them a points total of 98 points - a new club and league record.

"We know 98 points are an awful lot and it would be incredible to get that many by the end of the season. We are having a great campaign and we have won a lot of games. The coach is right in saying whoever wins the league title in the end will truly deserve it," he said. Higuain then commented on the 25 Primera Liga goals he has scored this season, one less than Barcelona's Leo Messi, who has 26.

"I try to help the team any way I can. Teamwork is what really counts because that's the only thing that can give you a title. I'd love to win the Pitxitxi (award for the top scorer in Spain) and Golden Boot trophies, but it's more important for me to help the team win the title. It would be great to do it all at once, but the league title is more important," he insisted

"All I am thinking about now are the five matches left to play and about helping the team with my goals. The end of the season will be tough for both us and Barcelona. We are just one point behind them with five games to go and I think we can overtake them," he told the club's official website.
