About 95 percent web users believe that China's internet industry has already been eroded by monopoly and approve of the government's suppression of the trend, according to a survey conducted by huanqiu.com.
A large number of web users consider that it (monopoly) has destroyed users' interests, such as the battle between Qihoo 360 and Tencent to exemplify, in which the pair threw stones at one another for underhanded business practices. They also believe the plague of monopoly will finally hinder healthy advancements in the field.
The poll on "should China curb the growing monopoly in its internet industry", launched online on February 18, received 14, 033 replies till 16:00 yesterday. Of the total, 13, 332 voted affirmatively.
"At present, the expansion of the titans depends on binding selling rather than innovation. The competition system in the industry phases out and the industry's competitiveness will also lessen; so does venture capital", told Fang Xingdong, founder of the Blog China and the Internet laboratory.

The report points out that the power abuse of internet monopoly has ruined the order within the industry and violated web users` rights. The trio Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba dominate search engine, instant messaging and e-business realm.
Baidu dictates 72.3 percent of the search engine market while Google, 26 percent. Tencent shares 76.56 percent in the instant messaging field and Fetion, 7.50 percent. In e-business, Alibaba takes up 54.3 percent of the B2B territory. Furthermore, the market value of the trio occupies 70 percent of China's listed internet companies.
The report also indicates that the government should improve the legislation system and tighten control over supervision and the industry ought to introduce a competitive mechanism and have timely reshufflings.
"Only when giants are restricted by anti-trust laws can the internet industry have a sound development", Fang added, "what the monopolist should do is to build a harmonious network environment." |
