Real Madrid win Madrid derby to keep up pace with Barcelona
March-20-2011

Goals from Karim Benzema and Mesut Ozil allowed Real Madrid to win the Madrid derby in Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium on Saturday night.

Benzema continued his spectacular run of form to clip the ball over Atletico keeper David de Gea after 10 minutes to put Real in front in their neighbors' home ground.

Ozil then finished off a pass from Marcelo, who was later the victim of some racist chanting from sections of the Atletico fans, to double Real's lead before the break. De Gea was at fault in the goal as he should have blocked the shot.

Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas meanwhile was his side's hero with a string of impressive saves and he was not beaten until five minutes from time when Kun Aguero gave Atletico a vain hope of an equalizer.

The win maintains Real Madrid five points off the top of the Spanish BBVA Primera Liga as league leaders FC Barcelona beat Getafe 2-1 thanks to goals from Dani Alves, who scored a spectacular 30 yard shot and Bojan Krkic, who was able to celebrate his 100th Primera Liga appearance thanks to a deflected effort after 50 minutes.

The Catalans, with David Villa especially guilty, missed a host of chances and had to suffer in the closing minutes after Manu del Moral scored an 88th minute volley for Getafe.

Saturday kicked off with Jonathan de Guzman scoring a 67th minute free kick to give Mallorca a 1-0 win in a terrible game against Zaragoza. De Guzman scored after Zaragoza keeper Toni Doblas had been sent off for handball outside his area.

The point keeps Mallorca safe in mid-table, while Zaragoza slip back towards the relegation zone.
