Macao switches lights off during "Earth Hour"
March-27-2011

Macao joined other cities around the world for this year's Earth Hour as major commercial and public buildings in Macao went dark for one hour on Saturday.

At 8:30 p.m. local time, exterior lights were turned off at government buildings throughout the city, including the government headquarter.

According to Macao's Environment Protection Bureau, the three bridges linking Taipa Island and Macao Peninsula had switched off their exterior lights for an hour, while necessary lights were still on during the Earth Hour for safety concerns.

Macao's major casino buildings, regarded as the city's landmarks, also turned off their shining lights, Environment Protection Bureau said.

It was the third time that Macao participated in this global event organized by World Wildlife Fund ( WWF) since 2009.
