Floods and landslides that were brought by stormy weather earlier this week in eight provincial-level regions have affected 1.57 million residents, the National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) said Friday.
Disasters caused by heavy rains and storms that occurred from Monday through Thursday in the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Yunnan and the autonomous region of Tibet have left six people dead as of 3 p.m. Friday, according to official statistics.
The disasters also resulted in direct economic losses of 350 million yuan (about 54.13 million U.S. dollars), the NCDR said in a statement.
In a related development, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) and the Ministry of Finance on Friday allocated 50 million yuan in subsidies to assist people living in flood zones in the provinces of Sichuan and Shaanxi.
The two ministries have allocated a total of 1.91 billion yuan in subsidies for people affected by natural disasters since the beginning of this year. About 435 million yuan was disbursed to people affected by rain-triggered floods. |
