An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale and depth of 16.8 km occurred in north coast of New Guinea province in Papua New Guinea, Monday morning, but there is no report of casualties or tsunami warning so far.

According to U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake happened at 09:38:57 A.M. local time near north coast of New Guinea, which is 701 km northwest of the national capital Port Moresby.

Earthquake activity is common in PNG but only a few are destructive.
