Hainan Airlines, established in October 1989 in Hainan Province, is the largest privately-owned air transport company and the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in China. In 1998, it became the first Chinese airline company to own shares in an airport after it purchased a 25 percent stake in Haikou Meilan International Airport. After over 20 years of development, the company now covers various industries, including tourism, airport management, logistics, hotel management, retailing and finance. As of the end of 2010, the company has total assets of 201.4 billion yuan (US$31.47 billion), and the business income of 2010 was 64.8 billion yuan (US$10.14 billion).
