An incisive political scientist, Melissa Harris-Perry recently joined Tulane University's faculty. In her latest book, Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America, Harris-Perry knocks down "pervasive negative race and gender images" about black women and examines how they appreciate themselves and connect "as citizens." She is also the director of Tulane's Anna Julia Cooper Project, which focuses on intersectional identities of race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation in the South. She is a frequent commentator on MSNBC.
