The 59th Sydney Film Festival has been officially launched by New South Wales Premier Barry O' Farrell, local media reported on Wednesday.

The 12 day Sydney Film Festival, which runs from June 6, is one of Australia's oldest film festivals and one of the most internationally recognized film events.

Over 150 films will be shown during the festival in June and about 120,000 people are expected to attend, according to the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reports.

"The Sydney Film Festival is a much-loved part of the arts calendar providing filmmakers with a wonderful opportunity to showcase their work, as well as providing an injection into the state economy," said O'Farrell at the launch on Wednesday.

The festival will present the best indigenous films from Australia and around the world as part of a curatorial partnership with Blackfella films.
