Amina Mohamed, deputy executive director of the UN Environment Programme, said Friday that China is now at the forefront of building capacity for developing countries in ecosystem management.
"China has been doing extremely well in terms of addressing environmental degradation," Amina said in an interview with Xinhua.
Amina said UNEP and China have collaborated very closely on South-South cooperation, and she hoped that South-South cooperation would benefit the global ecosystem which is the cornerstone of sustainable development.
She mentioned that China puts a lot of resources on environmental protection in its 12th Five-Year Plan."Its efforts are admirable and appreciable."
She stressed that addressing environmental degradation is a long-term process. "What is always important is that right measures are being taken. The result may not be evident immediately, but definitely will be evident in very near future. I think it's important that the steps are being taken to correct the situation."
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao announced last month at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20 summit) that China would contribute 6 million U.S. dollars to a UN Environment Program trust fund.
"UNEP and the government of China will discuss more deeply on utilising the funds," said Amina.
