The director of films such as "The Warlords", "Dragon" and "American Dreams in China" is the Jury President this year.
He is to lead a panel of film critics and industry experts from various Asian countries, including kung fu star Donnie Yen.
Peter Chan says he hopes the Awards will help to encourage greater cultural exchange in the region.
The frontrunner this year is, unsurprisingly, Wong Kar-wai's "The Grandmaster". The kung fu epic has earned 11 nods in all, including the major categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Actress, and Best Screenwriter.
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's science-fiction film "Snowpiercer" comes in at a distant second with five nominations.
The full nomination list includes 14 categories and there are a total of 28 nominated films from 10 different Asian countries and regions.
This year the AFA will be held outside of Hong Kong for the first time. The Awards will be handed out in Macao on March 27.
