Fog and rain bring flight misery in Shanghai

• Fog and heavy rain led to some 80 flights being cancelled and hundreds delayed at Shanghai’s airports yesterday morning.

  More than 150 international and domestic flights were delayed at Hongqiao International Airport by 1pm yesterday as the city’s weather forecasters issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms. Meanwhile, some 120 flights were held up at Pudong International Airport.

  Delays began during the morning peak time at both airports, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

  Flights to Chizhou in Anhui Province and Chongqing, Guiyang and other inland areas were among those delayed for about three hours.

  Schedules returned to normal in the afternoon as the weather improved.

  More delays are to be expected at the city’s airports over the next two months due to seasonal thunderstorms and typhoons, China Eastern Airlines said.

  Passengers should double-check flight information to avoid being stranded by delays at the airport, the local carrier advised.
