Tens of thousands of people in Beijing gathered at Chaoyang Park, in the eastern part of the Chinese capital on Oct. 1, 2014, to participate in various commemorative activities to mark the 65th National Day of the People's Republic of China.
A group ballroom dancing, held in open air and participated by more than 10,000 people, was among the highlights in the commemorations held here. The majority of the dancers were amateurs from different, grass-root walks of life in Chaoyang District. The age difference was between seven and 78.
Mr. Xiong Youwang was most aged dancer in the group. Dressed in a white shirt with a dark bowtie and suit trousers, Xiong said it was his second time to participated in such a grand National Day celebration; the first time was in 1959, the People's Republic's 10th birthday, when he was 23 at that time.
"On that day, I wore grass-green, military-style trousers and a white suit – our working uniform – on that day while marching across the Tiananmen Square in a 400-man formation. I wanted to turn aside to have a glimpse of Mao Zedong, but never dared to," said Xiong, referring to the disciplines in old days.
By contrast, Yan Ziyou, who is receiving constant training at Changying Children's Dance Team, was the youngest dancer. She and Xiong staged a cha-cha among the rest dancers.
Apart from the group dance, choir performances, acrobat shows, and a themed jogging also featured the activities on this day.
The commemorations in Chaoyang Park were in sync with similar activities held in almost all other 300 parks citywide, except different in scale.
