Heat wave bakes parts of China

• A pedestrian carries a battery-operated fan to keep himself cool in Tian’anmen Square in downtown Beijing yesterday when temperatures in the capital reached their highest of the year. As of 2pm, temperatures in most of the city had risen to between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius, while some areas downtown even saw the mercury rising to above 42 degrees Celsius. — Xinhua
