Animated movie "Monkey King: Hero Is Back" has set a record for the fastest Chinese animation to surpass the 200 million yuan mark.
The movie hit the milestone in less than six days.
The previous record was set by the latest "Boonie Bears" installment earlier this year, which took three weeks to surpass 200-million yuan mark.
Dubbed the "black horse" this summer, the animation opened lower than expected on its opening day (July 10), losing to coming-of-age movies "Tiny Times 4" and "Forever Young".
However, the movie has continued to top the daily charts at the box office over the past two days with a record high of 50 million yuan.
The film was adapted from the well-known legend of Monkey King but tells a whole different story, appealing to audiences of all ages.
Taking 8 years to complete, the animation has been well received among viewers.
"Monkey King: Hero Is Back" is rated 8.5 out of 10 at mtime.com, an IMDB-like site in China.
The movie is also preparing to open in US theatres.
