Dressed in a seemingly Chinese cloak, the mother of Chinese performance art Xiao Lu huddled over a pestle in which sat the Chinese classic "Book of Songs" and a collection of "Shakespeare's sonnets". Xiao Lu looks like a wizened magician as she huddles over the books, burning them into one mass of ash, before using the remaining ash and a dash of paint to mark the word 'sonnet' on to the Chinese and English teapot installation. The forms of the books burnt away while the base element remains, cultures blended together by their base nature. [Photo Phoenix Arts] |
